41st Annual College Hill Arts Festival

Head to the Hill for the 41st Annual College Hill Arts Festival on the corner of College Street and West 23rd Street in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Friday, June 21st and Saturday, June 22nd view artwork from 75 Artists. Artists come from far and wide to display their ceramics, fibers, glassware, graphics, jewelry, paintings, sculptures, and more. Special musical performances during the entire festival.

Local favorite La Calle Food Truck will be present along with many other local food vendors, and community clubs serving delicious foods. Make a day out of heading up to the Hill and enjoy everything from a cup of Sidecar Coffee or a donut from Icon Donuts in the morning to all of the nightlife College Hill has to offer.

Moving Out/Moving In? Will You Help us Reduce the Mess?

Here are some moving in/out guidelines:

1. “Garbage” at the curb can only be picked up by the city when placed inside the green garbage cart assigned to your address. You are allowed one extra bag a week on top of your trash cart with a pink bag tag attached to it. Bag Tags can be purchased at our Transfer Station at 1524 State St., Ace Hardware, Fareway, Hy Vee on University. You may also take your extra bags of trash to the transfer station Monday-Friday from 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. or on Saturday’s form 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There is a $0.75 cent fee per bag or you can weigh it in and our fee per ton for solid waste is $57.50. If you have the smaller cart you can always up-size to a larger size. We have three sizes of carts.

35 Gallon – $9.00 per month
64 Gallon – $17.00 per month
96 Gallon – $26.50 per month

You can call 273-8629 to change your size of cart if needed. We normally do cart exchanges on your day of collection.

2. Large item pickup is available and scheduled on your refuse collection day for residents with an active Cedar Falls refuse account. To schedule a pickup, call the Public Works Department at (319) 273-8629 between 7 am–4 pm, Monday–Friday. The large items must be placed curbside after 8:00 pm the night before your scheduled collection. This service is limited to large items only and is not intended to be a service for garbage. Residents are charged a $5 per stop fee for bulk collection appointments. The fee is added to your Cedar Falls Utility account.

The following items will be picked up: Couches, Chairs, Recliners, Tables, Carpet and Pad (rolled up), Box Springs, Mattresses, Doors (quantities no greater than three), Windows (quantities no greater than three), Swing Sets (dismantled and no concrete), Grills, Gutters and Down Spouts (sections must be less than 6 feet in length), Bicycles.

This service is only available to residents paying refuse fees to the City of Cedar Falls.

Charged Items: Picking up the following items will result in a charge of $7.50 each on your utility bill: Washers / Dryers, Refrigerators / Freezers, Dish Washers, Air Conditioners, Water Softeners, Water Heaters, Dehumidifiers / Humidifiers, Microwave Ovens, Stoves, Furnaces, Computers/TV’s $5.

Tires are charged as follows:

Car Tire (off rim): $2.50
Car Tire (on rim): $5.00
Truck / Tractor Tire (off rim): $6.50
Truck / Tractor Tire (on rim): $9.00

Refused Items: The following items will NOT be picked up:

Garbage, Yard Waste, Dirt, Hazardous Waste, Bricks, Rocks, Concrete, Sand, Construction, Demolition, Remodeling Materials,

Used Oil Filters (accepted free at the Transfer Station)
Oil (accepted free at the Transfer Station)

Any refuse pick-up violations are subject to a $200.00 hauling fee to the property owner and may impact the amount and timelines of the return of your security deposit.

City of Cedar Falls Evaluates Public Parking on College Hill

We a filled with gratitude and excitement the City of Cedar Falls is taking the time and supplying the funding to evaluate public parking on the Hill. They have heard all the public comments and the letters from the CHP about wanting to evaluate the public lots on the Hill. We know this is a big issue for Cedar Falls. And we are excited it is being addressed.

Currently there are several public parking lots on the Hill. Some are metered and some un-metered. Two things we know about the parking situation on the Hill:

1. It’s unique. Because of the close proximity to the campus of the University of Northern Iowa Parking is used differently than many business districts.

2. It evokes all kinds’ emotions and constant feedback. This is where we are asking for your help.

The City of Cedar Falls is in the process of evaluating the College Hill area public parking system. We appreciate your input as it will help us explore effective solutions that will benefit College Hill area businesses, employees, visitors, and residents. The survey will only take a few minutes to complete and all replies are confidential. The survey link is noted below and can be accessed from the City’s website. It will be live thru April 12^th. Sidecar Coffee’s Pour Over Workshop

According to an article on OrganicFacts.net coffee has several health benefits. Benefits range from improving cognition and increase metabolism to improving heart health and protecting your liver. Now we’re not experts on health or coffee but knowing there are some great benefits from our favorite morning beverage just makes us want to drink it more.

So when we heard about an amazing event at Sidecar Coffee we were all in. Held on March 2^nd at 10 am the Pour Over Workshop will teach you how to make the perfect cup using a pour over method. Co-Owner Andy Fuchtman (CHP Past President and current Board Member) said their “top reason [for hosting these workshops] is we want people’s coffee to taste better, and to build our local community of coffee fans.” Who doesn’t want their coffee to taste better? And who doesn’t want to meet new people while learning? Our friends and coffee experts are going to teach this method using the Hario V60. Love coffee and want to learn more about it? This year the College Hill Partnership is working to be more efficient. You could say it’s the CHP’s New Year’s Resolution. With that in mind, the Board passed a resolution at our October Board Meeting to ensure the membership application process is streamlined & open for a longer period of time to encourage increased participation in the College Hill Partnership.

Benefits to CHP Membership:

Vote for board members and any changes made to bylaws in the upcoming election

All formal communication includes: updates, minutes, agendas, meeting reminders

A resolution passed allowed two possible ways to have membership dues waived. Each person who qualifies for the waiver program has been notified by email. Waiver Opportunities:

During CHP’s calendar year (May 2018 to March 2019) you have volunteered for CHP events, or committees totaling over five hours. College Hill Partnership Monthly and Annual Board meetings do not qualify towards these hours.
You own property in the College Hill Overlay SSMID district and pay taxes into the SSMID fund helps support the CHP.

If you qualify for the wavier opportunities you will receive one membership which is non-transferable. An application must be submitted by the deadline (March 1, 2019) for you to obtain all privileges listed above. A record of volunteer hours (dates, times, description) must be provided with the application if requesting a waiver.

Open just in time for the spring semester ICON Donuts and Sweetery is the perfect start to your school or work day. We headed in after lunch the other day to give you a peek inside and of course try some of their amazing donuts. ICON is locally owned so you will see some familiar faces there who always greet you with a smile. The staff is ready to help you with the perfect selection of sweets for any occasion.

Our executive director grabbed a dozen donuts including some of their ICON donuts. If you love lemon you need to grab a Liz Lemon named after Tina Fey’s character on 30 Rock. They have all your favorite traditional donuts. Plus their awesome selection of ICON donuts, named for artists, characters, musicians, and famous people.

NEW Shoe Store Opens on College Hill in Cedar Falls, Iowa

January 11^th marked the opening day for one of the newest businesses on College Hill in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Price Check Kicks opened their doors with a Grand Opening celebration. The opening was complete with snacks, balloons and the perfect pair of shoes for all of you sneaker fanatics. They are located on West 23^rd Street right between Marsala Market and Icon Donuts and Sweetery.

We headed in on opening day to check out the selection and meet the staff. Walking into the store we were greeted by customers and staff alike which isn’t surprising in a laid back professional atmosphere. After looking through their selection of everything including Nike, YEEZY, Jordan’s and more we headed back to their lounge area where we found some customers enjoying some snacks and shooting some hoops in their relaxing lounge area. This store like many of the College Hill Businesses offers a place for their customers to have an experience not just a place to buy shoes.

Price Check Kicks on College Hill in Cedar Falls doesn’t just sell shoes they buy, trade, and clean shoes. They even have consignment. They have also added vintage jerseys. We really love their logo tees and sweatshirts that ask “What’s your Price?” on the front with their logo on the back.
